Chinese government launches Panguso, all your search are belong to us

Panguso search engine
Not content with by far the largest cellular network in the world, state-owned China Mobile has joined forces with the state-owned Xinhua News Agency to create the state-owned search engine Panguso. Their new offering pits itself against the current incumbent, Baidu, which has 75% of the search market in China.

The idea is that Xinhua, which is one of the world's largest news agencies, will provide the content -- and judging by the front page, news is definitely front and center at the moment. China Mobile, with its 600 million mobile subscribers, will provide the technological expertise, and maintain an SMS bridge between the search engine and its mobile users.

This isn't just about mobile, though: China has 450 million Internet users, and Panguso's launch is obviously the Chinese government's attempt to grab back some of the market share from Baidu and Google. Google, incidentally, decamped from China to Hong Kong back in March 2010 -- and it was only in August 2010 that China Mobile and Xinhua begun work on Panguso. Baidu has enjoyed a virtual monopoly since its inception in 2000.

In a day and age where we have grown accustomed to the democratization and decentralization of information, it seems rather odd to see the emergence of a state-owned search engine. China already has a very strict policy on censoring politically-sensitive material, which Baidu strictly abides by -- so unless it wants to further extend its control of information inside its borders, why would the Chinese government be interested in offering an alternative?

If we fast forward a few years, to when the Chinese government eventually blocks Baidu, a whole 20% of the Internet's populace will be forced to use a state-owned search engine. Xinhua, the government-run news agency, would of course become the de facto source of news for every cellular and Internet user in China. You can probably imagine what it would be like to have just a single news source in the U.S. -- now imagine that, plus a firewall that prevents you from easily peering beyond your border to see what's actually going on...

BufferZone Pro sandboxing software now a totally free download

trustware bufferzone pro free download
Trustware's BufferZone was an early entrant into the desktop sandboxing arena. Sandboxing, of course, is the security-by-isolation system which has since been built into apps like Google Chrome and Adobe Reader X. Recently, Trustware launched a promotion and gave away BufferZone Pro for free -- and now the company is making the discount permanent. From now on, BufferZone Pro will be freeware.

But, wait -- BufferZone still doesn't support x64, and maybe you're thinking that there will be a paid version once a 64-bit Windows version arrives. Not so, Trustware's Efrat Schneider told me in an email: "The product will continue to be free," he replied.

If you're looking for a free way to tighten up security on your Windows system, BufferZone is an excellent app for the job. We'll let you know when the 64-bit version becomes available.

Mac OS X requires a helper program to connect to Android 3.0 tablets

Android File Transfer, Honeycomb OS X bonding
Android 3.0 Honeycomb, the OS that runs on the recently-released Motorola Xoom, will not bond with Mac OS X unless you install a helper program on your PC first.

The program, which is aptly named Android File Transfer, provides third-party Media Transfer Protcol (MTP) support, which Mac OS X doesn't natively provide. MTP started off as a Windows Media Player technology, which is probably why Apple doesn't support it, but today it's represented by a standard USB device class and an extension of its precursor, PTP.

MTP support is definitely a step up as far as Android is concerned. Rather than 'turn on mass storage mode,' which locks local apps out of your SD card, MTP allows both the phone and the PC to access your phone's filesystem at the same time. Hopefully Medial Transfer Protocol will find its way to the smartphone version of Android in due course

Incidentally, it's possible that the upcoming version of OS X, Lion, could support MTP. If anyone has Lion, and a Motorola Xoom, we'd love to know if you've had any luck connecting them.

Download every Sports Illustrated 2011 Swimsuit photo with a simple Perl script

After the runaway success of last year's Sports Illustrated Perl downloader, Download Squad reader and cameltoe connoisseur, Sparticus, has produced the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Downloader 2011. It's a simple Perl script that you can run on Windows, Mac and Linux -- and before you know it, your computer will be positively overflowing with bikini-clad babes.

Like last year, the script doesn't only download the final, glossy-magazine-destined photos. There's tons of behind-the-scenes stuff, and lots of shots that simply didn't make the final cut. Last year there were around 1200 photos to download -- we're still running this year's downloader, but it looks like there could be even more!

Linux users, you'll be able to simply download the script, chmod +x, and run. Windows users will need a copy of wget and a Perl distro, such as ActivePerl. Mac users can use the Xcode Developer Tools.

Alternatively, be a cool kid and run Ubuntu in VirtualBox!

Adobe Flash Player 11 "incubator" ready to download, packs 3D rendering muscle

Adobe recently announced that Flash Player 11 would feature some impressive upgrades -- including new hardware accelerated 3D graphics APIs. Currently, Flash 10.1 can render a few thousand polygons at 30 FPS. The updated 3D kung fu allows Flash 11 to easily render hundreds of thousands of polygons at 60 FPS, which is obviously a massive improvement.

End users won't notice much difference at this point -- the Flash 11 Incubator release is primarily aimed at developers at this stage. Still, the 3D performance gains look impressive and should lead to some killer Time Wasters once Flash Player 11 goes final.

If you'd like to get your hands dirty with the new Flash, head on over to Adobe Labs.

CueThat for Netflix adds movies to your queue while you surf

CueThat is a slick little browser add-on that lets you add any movie you happen upon while browsing the Web to your Netflix queue. Just highlight a title, right click and choose CueThat from your context menu, and voila: it's added to your list. It even works with movies that are still only screening in theaters.

CueThat is offered as an extension for both Firefox and Chrome, though the bookmarklet works just as well and is usable in any Web browser. It's well worth adding to your bookmark toolbar if you're a Netflix user who hunts for movie reviews or recommendations while browsing the Web.

Queuenoodle warns you when Netflix streaming movies are about to expire

Streaming movies on Netflix is convenient, but the films aren't available forever. If you've got a packed Watch Instantly queue and you need to make sure you watch your flicks before they expire, subscribe to Queuenoodle, a new Twitter feed from Twitter's Robin Sloan. It posts alerts between a day and a week before a movie expires, so you don't miss it. Heck, maybe you'll see a movie that you didn't even know you could watch instantly.

Without Queuenoodle, I would never have known that today is my last chance to watch Mortal Kombat on Netflix! This is a dead simple, really useful idea that Netflix probably should have implemented on its own a long time ago.

Balls in Space is an addictive retro platformer -- Time-Waster

ballsinspace
Let me start of by saying there's nothing NSFW about Balls in Space; I mean, not that playing any Flash game is very "safe for work", but Balls in Space isn't NSFW in that way, if you know what I mean (hint hint, nudge nudge, say no more!).

Now that we've got that out of the way, let me tell you about the game: You're a ball. On your own, you can run and jump, and that's about it. But as with good platformers, power-ups abound. Specifically, you collect little balls along the way which you can shoot out at the baddies. The balls don't go in a straight line - they're subject to gravity, and they bounce off walls and barriers.

Another handy power-up is the Ninja, which lets you execute double-jumps. With these (and perhaps a couple of others which I have yet to uncover) you basically need go through the levels, kill the baddies, and get to the door every time. A few minutes into the game you'll find a nice homage to the Mario franchise, too. Quite a fun little game!

Yahoo shuts down MyBlogLog, a $10 mil purchase you never heard of

In the grand scheme of things, $10 million isn't a ton of money for a big company like Yahoo! to spend acquiring another company. Still, for an embattled Yahoo!, shutting down MyBlogLog is another sad trombone in its symphony of missteps.

MyBlogLog was a service which allowed bloggers to create a community for their sites. The shutdown was called out in the famous "sunsetting" slideshow in late 2010, where Yahoo! revealed that popular bookmarking site Delicious would also not be part of its future plans.

Despite all this, Yahoo! remains one of the most popular sites on the Internet -- it actually topped ComScore's U.S. traffic chart for January 2011.

Google Image Search now lets you filter vector-only results

google
Google Image Search just got a bit fancier: You can now filter search results to only include SVG files.

SVG files, which stand for Scalable Vector Graphics, are files you can easily edit and change without loss of definition. If you've been following our Corel tutorials, they might have given you some ideas about the power of vector graphics.

Being able to use Google to find such files gives designers a great head-start: Need to use a cat in your artwork? Just find a vector one which looks about right, and modify it for your needs! Anything can be edited - the cat's pose, its proportion, colors, etc.

Searching for these files is very simple: Just tack filetype:svg on to the end of your search, like cat filetype:svg, or go to the sidebar and click Images > SVG files.

Being able to find SVGs so easily also poses a bit of a copyright issue however. Anyone posting SVG files publicly should certainly put in a bit more of an effort to make their terms of use very clear, and anyone using them should heed those terms. Play nice folks!

Google's Native Client updates to Pepper API, looks set to fragment the Web

Native Client (NaCl), Google's attempt at bridging the gap between pure JavaScript Web apps and installed programs, creeps ever closer to a stable release, and ultimate inclusion in other browsers, including Firefox. The plug-in, which allows the browser to safely execute native compiled code, has retired its NPAPI interface in favor of Pepper (PPAPI), and now has a much-improved SDK.

NaCl, as a concept, is awesome. It allows for untrusted code to be executed natively, which is perfect for processor-intensive tasks like games and data analysis. The ultimate goal is to have NaCl modules that you can plug into a website, just like JavaScript is used at the moment -- a physics module, a maths module, a graphics module. JavaScript would still manage the easier bits, while NaCl would be leveraged for meatier tasks.

Ultimately, however, NaCl could cause immeasurable damage to the Open Web paradigm. NaCl is an open source project, but it still brings the same risks of fragmentation as Flash, Silverlight and Java applets. As it stands, only Chrome supports the Pepper interface that NaCl requires -- and with IE9 and Firefox 4 only weeks away from release, it would be a long time until support for the plug-in could improve.

If NaCl gains enough traction, Chrome could become the next IE6...

Google Translate for iPhone now in App Store

Google released a Google Translate Web app for iPhone users back in 2008, but now the Apple crowd has a native Google Translate iPhone app. Available in the App Store now, the free Google Translate app includes speak-to-translate for 15 languages, a full screen mode, and the ability to listen to translations in 23 languages.

The iPhone app doesn't have Android's on-the-fly "conversation mode," but it does allow you to quickly zoom up the text size of your translation, so you can easily show it to the person you're trying to communicate with. The ability to play back your translations using the voice synthesizers Google first introduced in the desktop version of Google Translate is also cool. Sure, Google Translate for iPhone is a long time coming, but it's a nice step up from the Web app.

Groovylists makes Grooveshark playlists from iTunes, Last.fm, or Spotify

Groovylists
If you love music site Grooveshark for its huge streaming music library, but hate the process of recreating your favorite playlists for Grooveshark use, you'll love Groovylists. This little web app copies any playlist you've set up in iTunes, Spotify, or Last.fm, right over to Grooveshark, with a few limitations.

Groovylists can't import playlists bigger than 200 songs, so you can't use it to pull in your entire library at once. It also can't make songs that aren't on Grooveshark magically appear there. If the 'Shark doesn't have the songs you need, you'll have to upload them yourself.

The sudden popularity of Groovylists means it occasionally hits Grooveshark's API rate limit and stops working for a while. There's not too much Groovylists can do about the problem, other than setting up a partnership with Grooveshark to get the rate limit lifted (we can hope!), so just be patient and try again later if it's not working for you.

UPDATE: We've received word from Groovylists that there was a fix for the rate limit problem, and everything should be working as normal again!

Firefox 4 infographic from Mozilla taunts IE9

Not one to let it lie (yes, Asa, we're looking at you), Mozilla's Technical Evangelist, Paul Rouget, has produced a fancy infographic that details just how much ass Firefox 4 kicks in comparison to IE9. If you're in a hurry, here's the summary: FIREFOX RULES; IE9 SUX. For detailed analysis, read on.

For the most part Rouget relies in Firefox's pure, numerical superiority, rather than real-world use cases. Firefox 4 supports more of the HTML5 and CSS3 standards. Firefox implements almost the entire JavaScript API, as opposed to IE9's mediocre 48%. Firefox supports more Web technologies. To really drive it home, the infographic even shows how Firefox 3.5 and 3.6 are superior to Microsoft's latest offering.

Don't be mesmerized by the tawdry typography, though: with juicy propaganda it's always what isn't said that matters. There is no mention of IE9's hyperspeed JavaScript engine, Chakra. There's no mention of pinned tabs or per-process tabs or Tracking Protection Lists. It feels a bit like a scrawny, bespectacled geek throwing stones at a fat billionaire with three trophy wives -- the nerd is probably right, but the pimp doesn't really care.

There's no doubt that Firefox 4 implements a broader range of Web technologies -- and don't get us wrong, it is an excellent browser -- but more stuff doesn't necessarily equate to better stuff. You can do a lot more with a pick-up truck than a Ferrari, but choosing which one you want to drive isn't necessarily an easy decision

Sparrow email client for Mac reaches 1.0, lands in Mac App Store

Sparrow, the gorgeous Mac email client released late last year, is now at version 1.0 and up for sale in the Mac App Store. Previous versions weren't stable enough to replace Mail.app entirely, but Sparrow has overcome its growing pains to become a solid Mail alternative. With support for multiple accounts, and UI design that borrows heavily from Twitter for Mac, it's no surprise that Sparrow almost immediately hit the top of the Mac App Store's bestseller list.

Sparrow 1.0 does have its drawbacks, though. It still only supports Gmail (and Google Apps email accounts), which might be a dealbreaker for some. Anyone who's not using Gmail should wait for version 1.1, which will reportedly add support for all IMAP accounts. The $10 pricetag is reasonable for what you get, and anyone using a beta version will find it worth upgrading for the performance improvements and Gmail label support.

One little quirk to be aware of: if you have a beta version of Sparrow installed, you may need to delete it or move it out of your Applications folder before you can buy Sparrow 1.0 from the Mac App Store. Otherwise, the App Store will think you already have the app installed.

Readability pulled from App Store, calls out Apple for its greed

readability
Apple's new in-app extortion subscription fee model hasn't made the company many fans since it was announced last week. Apple has further vilified itself by pulling Readability -- a longtime geek favorite -- from the App Store for violating the new in-app subscription rules.

Readability is an odd target, especially considering Apple liked the script enough to build it into its Web browser as Safari Reader. Nevertheless, rules are rules, and Apple helpfully pointed Readability to section 11.2 of the App Store Guidelines, which requires developers to utilize Apple's payment system. The Readability team is pretty miffed, going so far as to say, "we believe that your new policy smacks of greed."

Mac OS X Lion: the multi-touch offspring of Windows 7 and iOS

Windows 7 OS X Lion
Yesterday, Apple released the developer preview of Mac OS X Lion, the first major update to OS X since August 2009. Two major things have uprooted the computing world since then: the launch of Windows 7 in October 2009, and the iPad in 2010.

It's no surprise, then, that OS X Lion looks like the lovechild of Windows 7 and iOS. White box-thumping purists will claim, somehow, that this is revolutionary, world-changing, pivotal. Realists will acknowledge that, for the first time in at least a decade, Apple might be following Microsoft's lead.

Hyperbole aside, though, we should be excited: more than anything, OS X Lion is a glimpse of the future of tablet computing.

Bricked phones force Microsoft to block WP7 update for Samsung devices

Microsoft pulls WP7 update from Samsung phones
Microsoft has "identified a a technical issue with the Windows Phone update process" and summarily blocked Samsung WP7 phones from receiving the new patch.

As we reported yesterday, the new update, which was meant to streamline future updates, bricked some Samsung Omnia phones. Microsoft has identified the issue, however, and is working quickly to push the update back out. It's not yet known whether the update will fix the bricked devices, though -- presumably, those unfortunate users may have to send their phone back to Microsoft or Samsung for a refund.

Corel releases VideoStudio Pro X4, we go hands on (video)

videostudioprox4
Corel seems to be on a roll lately; after releasing WinZip System Utilities just last week, this morning the company announced VideoStudio Pro X4.

VideoStudio Pro is aimed at home users and small business professionals who want to create professional-looking videos, but without the hassle, steep learning curve and price of Adobe Premiere Pro and the likes.

This new version introduces several features:
  • Stop motion animation: You can now capture still frames using a webcam, camcorder or DSLR and use them to produce an animation. Tools such as "onion skin view" let you compare the previous image in the sequence with the current one and make the animation as smooth as possible.
  • Processor optimization: Corel says the app is optimized for Intel's new Sandy Bridge systems, and have shown us some graphs with very impressive numbers. We've been unable to test this particular point, but if you have a recent-generation Intel or AMD Fusion system, VideoStudio performance should be blazing. Even on our older test system performance was quite impressive.
  • Customizable workspace: You can drag the video preview window to your secondary monitor (if you have one) and tweak just about any other element in the window layout. Once done, you can save your ideal workspace in one of three slots.
  • Share-to-Web: VideoStudio Pro X4 hooks directly into YouTube, Vimeo, Facebook and Flickr, so you don't even have to launch a browser to upload your final product. Edit, produce and share from within the app itself.
  • Smart Package: Video projects typically consist of many files; Smart Package lets you bundle all video assets for a given project into one ZIP file which you can password-protect and keep in a safe place once you're done editing.
I've had a chance to play around with a pre-release version for a few days, and have put it through its paces editing a short video for my day job. Overall, I've been impressed with how easy it was to create pro-looking results. If you do any sort of video editing but are leery of the investment other apps require (both in dollars and effort), VideoStudio Pro is well worth checking out. To see a bit of the interface itself and what the app can do, watch the video after the jump.

Note: We'll be running a give-away of ten VideoStudio Pro X4 licenses later today, each worth $100 USD. Keep your eyes peeled for the giveaway post!

Fade is Canabalt for llama lovers

fade
This game had me at the intro. I usually don't care for the intros many of these games have; I often tend to skip them, even if it sometimes means not understanding the game as well as I could. But when Fade loaded, there was a message written in tiny letters saying I can skip the intro, but that it is highly recommended to continue. I decided to heed the message, and I'm happy I did! It's truly beautiful, and made me feel something. [Erez is secretly a heartless, soulless robot -Ed] You should try the game just for the intro.

But aside from the intro, I found this game to be pretty satisfying. You're playing a little llama that wants to see in color. Her (or his?) world is all black and white, and it has to run very fast in order to see colors. Each round you try to gain as much speed as you can, while jumping over chasms and avoiding "slow-down" barrels. When you do this, you gain skill points which you can use to... get better skills! This means you can accelerate faster, have more speed, jump higher and so forth.

Supposedly, if you run fast enough and gain enough skill, your game should suddenly become colorful! I did not get there yet, but they sure got me excited about it! I will probably spend the next few days trying to get my llama to see in color.

Did you make it?

Cisco kills off Web-based email service

cisco webex web email
Cisco has conceded defeat in the Web-based email game. The enterprise powerhouse just couldn't make a dent against players like Microsoft and Google, and announced today that it would shut down its WebEx hosted webmail product. WebEx debuted a couple years ago and was built upon software from PostPath, which Cisco acquired in 2008 for $215 million.

At $5 per user per month, Cisco provided only 5GB mailboxes. Google Apps, on the other hand, offers five times that storage at a slightly lower price -- and also has a totally free offering for businesses with less than 50 users. Cisco's official statment said that businesses "have come to view their email as a mature and commoditized tool versus a long-term differentiated element of their collaboration strategy." That sounds like a flowery way to say "we haven't attracted many customers since we launched this in 2009."

BlackHole RAT Mac OS X backdoor Trojan virus mimics password prompt

BlackHole RAT, Mac OS X Trojan
A new backdoor Trojan virus that targets Mac OS X has emerged, Sophos reports. Interestingly, the new virus, which is called BlackHole RAT (or OSX/MusMinim-A in virus definition speak), is a variant of the 'legitimate' Windows Trojan DarkComet-RAT.

Fortunately, the virus doesn't seem to be very malicious. It allows a remote controller to reboot or shutdown an infected computer, or pop up a fake 'Administrator Password' box that can be used to phish a user's password -- but for the most part, it actually seems to be a proof of concept; a warning to Mac users that their OS can be infected.

One of BlackHole RAT's functions pops open a full-screen dialog with only a 'reboot' button, and the following, vaguely sociopathic message:
"I am a Trojan Horse, so i have infected your Mac Computer. I know, most people think Macs can't be infected, but look, you ARE Infected!

I have full controll over your Computer and i can do everything I want, and you can do nothing to prevent it.

So, Im a very new Virus, under Development, so there will be much more functions when im finished."
You kind of expect 'muhahaha!!1' to be at the end.

As for how the virus is distributed, it is probably via the usual channels: pirate downloads, or vulnerable browser plug-ins. Sophos notes that its Anti-Virus for Mac Home Edition, which is a free download, identifies and removes the virus. You should probably run it, just to make sure you're not infected.

Download official Android 3.0 Honeycomb wallpaper images

android 3.0 honeycomb wallpaper images
As is usually the case with new Android SDK releases, various bits and pieces have been ripped out and shared with the world thanks to an enthusiastic and ambitious dev community. Over at the Android Central forums, Alex Dobie has shared nine new wallpaper images which are bundled in the tablet-friendly Android 3.0 Honeycomb SDK.

The images are fairly high-res, too, at 1980x1408 pixels -- so they may even be a good fit for your desktop or laptop if you want to show off your affinity for Android.

You'll need to register with Android Central before you can access the download link, or you can wait patiently for the images to be posted elsewhere. They'll more than likely be mirrored a dozen different places by the time you read our post, after all -- so feel free to share alternative download locations in the comments!

Update: we've uploaded the wallpapers to our own Web hosting -- feel free to download them after the break. Click a thumbnail to see the full-size version.

Android Market now offers e-book purchases

There were some interesting discoveries noted when the Android Market website went live recently. Specific URLs behaved differently than the categories listed on the site -- they ended with books, music, and movies. Now, TechCrunch reports that the Books subsection is active. Right now, however, the Books tab will only appear for users who access the it via the Market App on an Android 3.0 Honeycomb tablet.

Books are categorized, and top paid, top free, and recently added titles are also on display. Pick a title you want to download, and it's added to your Google Books account. You don't need to own a tablet to make a purchase, so we expect the Books tab to appear soon on non-Honeycomb devices and in the Web Market as well. Complete a purchase, and it's instantly available via the Google Books app.

Books could, of course, already be purchased from http://books.google.com/ebooks, but the Android Market will provide a good deal of additional exposure and plenty of new customers.

WordPress 3.1 released, features massive writing workflow and admin overhauls

WordPress 3.1 releasedWith over 2,000 code commits and 820 bug and feature fixes, WordPress 3.1 has been released. You can download the new version in its entirety, or simply log into your WordPress.org installation and update via the Dashboard.

The most notable new new change is a massively overhauled writing interface, which should make the entire publishing process both more streamlined and less intimidating for new users. Linking back to old posts and pages is now a lot easier, too (just click a button and start searching), and lots of rarely-used blocks have now been hidden by default (they can be re-enabled in Screen Options).

There's a new Admin Bar, which appears at the top of every page and makes moving around your blog's back end a whole lot easier. For power users and theme makers, there are now Post Formats, which significantly increase the flexibility of WordPress layouts.

For a complete list of the changes and new features, check the WordPress 3.1 Codex page.

Priority Inbox comes to Gmail Mobile

Google's Priority Inbox feature is now supported in the Gmail Mobile web app. Priority Inbox automatically sorts your incoming email and pushes your most important messages to the top of the page, and it was previously only available to desktop users and those running the Gmail app for Android. Now, anyone with an HTML5-friendly mobile browser -- including Android 1.5+ or iOS 3.0+ users -- can take advantage of the feature.

You'll still have to set up Priority Inbox from the desktop version of Gmail, but once you do it will start working automatically on your mobile device. Important emails will appear under the "Priority Inbox" label, and yellow "importance marker" flags will show up next to important messages in your inbox.
