Android 2.3.3 Gingerbread comes to Nexus One with WebM, disables Facebook contact sync

Google has pushed another minor update to its tandem of Android flagship phones, the Nexus One and Nexus S. Apart from officially rolling out Android 2.3 Gingerbread to the Nexus One nearly two months after it was released, the update also brings with it support for Google's WebM video container. Changes in Android 2.3.3 also include fixes for a random reboot issue on the Nexus S and additional NFC functionality -- most notably, the ability to modify rewritable NFC tags which can currently only be read.

The update has also put the kibosh on Facebook for Android's built-in contact sync. Previously, Google had allowed Facebook to leave users' contact data in the cloud and access them on demand. With the Android 2.3.3 update, Google seems to be sticking to its guns that contact data needs to be synced to the phone using Google's approved methods. That way, even if you uninstall the Facebook app, you'd still have access to your friends' contact info like email addresses and phone numbers.

Right now, this change only affects owners of the Nexus S and other "lead devices," as was explained to Engadget. Google's official statement on the change is after the break.

NBA Jam for iPhone is just as fun and addictive as the classic SNES version

If you loved NBA Jam on the Super Nintendo console back in the '90s, the iPhone version will transport you back to the slammin', jammin' days of yore. If you're new to the classic two-on-two basketball game, prepare to waste a whole lot of time, and get some ice ready for your sore thumbs.

NBA Jam for iPhone is a faithful translation of NBA Jam Tournament Edition, featuring at least three regular players (plus one or two unlockable characters) from every NBA team. Unlockable bonuses abound, and you can even shell out for some in-app purchases if you want extra characters and play modes without doing the work. The controls take a little getting used to -- especially if you choose to play with gestures -- and the lack of an online multiplayer mode is disappointing, but the overall gameplay experience is worth your $5.

Below, we bring you a closer look at the small-screen NBA Jam experience.

Gogo Navigator supports real-time turn by turn navigation throughout the United States and Canada at a decent price. I recently looked at Garmin StreetPilot for iPhone which is currently priced at $34.99. While the app had a great interface and offers turn by turn navigation, I found it had one huge down side. StreetPilot does not store maps natively. This means if you’re out of range of a signal you won’t be able to access maps since they can’t pull from the servers.

Gogo Navigator uses native maps for navigation. Regardless whether you have a signal or not, you can still get turn by turn directions. They offer maps in regular view as well as real-time 3D view. You also have the features you’d expect from a good GPS app like favorites and places of interest (POI). Gogo Navigator is currently priced at $29.99 in the app store which is a great deal for a decent GPS app. It’s a much lower price point that most and I found it did the job just as well as some of my other GPS apps. Hit the jump for some screens!

Pixelfari browser lets you surf the web in 8-bit on OS X

Pixelfari is unlike any other Mac browser on the market: it renders every webpage in glorious 8-Bit. Pixel-fonts are the default, and the icons have all been 8-bitified. Every image Pixelfari loads gets pixelated, too. It's a bit jarring for an everyday browsing experience and it doesn't exactly support contemporary web standards, but Pixelfari is a fun novelty. Oh, and this shouldn't surprise anyone: one of the folks behind Pixelfari is Neven Mrgan, known for his work on retro-styled 8-bit iOS game The Incident.

Google Image Search now lets you filter vector-only results

google
Google Image Search just got a bit fancier: You can now filter search results to only include SVG files.

SVG files, which stand for Scalable Vector Graphics, are files you can easily edit and change without loss of definition. If you've been following our Corel tutorials, they might have given you some ideas about the power of vector graphics.

Being able to use Google to find such files gives designers a great head-start: Need to use a cat in your artwork? Just find a vector one which looks about right, and modify it for your needs! Anything can be edited - the cat's pose, its proportion, colors, etc.

Searching for these files is very simple: Just tack filetype:svg on to the end of your search, like cat filetype:svg, or go to the sidebar and click Images > SVG files.

Being able to find SVGs so easily also poses a bit of a copyright issue however. Anyone posting SVG files publicly should certainly put in a bit more of an effort to make their terms of use very clear, and anyone using them should heed those terms. Play nice folks!

Z-Type is a fun way to learn to touch type

z-type
If you're a skilled touch-typist, this time-waster isn't for you. But if you're just learning to touch-type (or have recently switched to a superior layout), Z-Type might prove a nice way to practice your typing skills while having a bit of fun.

It's a basic shooter game: Spaceships come at you from the top, and you need to shoot and destroy them before they hit the bottom and destroy you. You do the shooting by typing the words associated with the baddies: Each spaceship has one word, and every letter sends a shot aimed at it. Once you finish typing the word, the ship explodes.

The graphics are very nice, and when you're done with the game it shows you your score and accuracy. The only thing I didn't like about this game is that it wouldn't let me set the speed, and it seems to be aimed at novice typists. If I could just select the level of difficulty before starting to play, I suspect it would have been much more engaging.

Still, for novice typists it's a great little way to practice!

Gingerbread (Android 2.3.2) leaked for the Galaxy S i9000

Galaxy S Gingerbread leak

Gingerbread (the Android 2.3.2 version) has been leaked for the Samsung Galaxy S i9000.  Users at XDA Developers are saying that it includes Touchwiz 4, and download mode is still available.  It also looks like Samsung is now using the ext4 file system, which should bring performance boosts much like the ones on the Nexus S.

Remember, this is a beta build -- at best.  I wouldn't recommend anyone run and flash it, but in the hands of developers it's like 24 karat gold -- possibly leading to things like CyanogenMod 7 for Samsung Galaxy S phones.  What this means for US customers who are tied to a carrier for upgrades is unknown, but at least Samsung has Gingerbread in the works.  Check the source link for download locations.  [XDA-Developers] Thanks everyone who sent this in!

10+ great add-ons that only work with Firefox 4

Along with the ability to be restartless, Firefox 4 add-ons also have an entirely new interface to manipulate! There's a new add-on bar at the bottom of the screen, which replaces Firefox 3's status bar -- and then there's that infernal orange button that Mozilla, in its infinite wisdom, has made completely immovable.

There are other new features, too, like app tabs -- wouldn't it be nice to double click a tab, rather than having to fumble around with the right mouse button? And how about some visual notifications in those app tabs, too? Then there's the add-on that lets you set your tab width as narrow (or as wide!) as you like.

Finally, don't forget the handful of Firefox 4-only add-ons from Mozilla Labs that make the browser perform a lot like Chrome...

Mac OS X Lion Time Machine capable of 'Local Snapshots' without external hard drive

OS X Lion Time Machine local snapshots
9to5 Mac has uncovered another cool feature in OS X Lion: Apple's back up tool, Time Machine, will support backups to an internal hard drive.

Dubbed 'Local Snapshots,' it sounds like it will be very similar to Versions, another new feature in OS X Lion that keeps track of changes to documents, and lets you revert to older versions. Local Snapshots, on the other hand, will take a snapshot of every modified file on your hard drive every hour. It sounds like it could drain an awful lot of system resources (CPU time and hard drive space), but we'll have to wait and see.

If anything, it just sounds like this is a convenience measure more than anything else: we should make daily backups, but plugging in an external hard drive every night is a pain in the ass. With Local Snapshots, you can go a few days without plugging in -- and when you finally do, Time Machine will copy all of your local snapshots to the external drive.

Microsoft will release Internet Explorer 9 on March 14 at SXSW

According to a source that's intimately familiar with the situation, Microsoft will release the final version of Internet Explorer 9 at the SXSW conference on March 14.

This information tallies nicely with what we already know: Microsoft has said that there will only be one RC, and March 14 very nearly fits the six-week release cycle that Internet Explorer has so far stuck to. Most importantly, though, the IE team is holding a party at SXSW -- and parties generally celebrate something.

Microsoft has already said that the RC will automatically update to the final version, but we're not sure whether a switch will be flipped at the SXSW party, or if we'll have to wait for the next Patch Tuesday. Either way, a direct download should be made available around 9pm on March 14.

If you haven't played around with the Release Candidate yet, you really should. It won't satisfy you if you're an avid add-on user, or if you sync between computers, but if you're just looking for a slick, spartan and speedy browser, IE9 ticks all the boxes.

Samsung Video Editor now available for some Android 2.2 phones

Samsung, rather stealthily, has released a Video Editor for its Galaxy S and Vibrant Android 2.2 phones. The APK is available for those of us with different phones, but early reports suggest that it only works on Samsung's flagship phones for now. Keep an eye on the xda-developers thread, though: they will probably work out how to get it running on other phones soon.

Functionality-wise, Samsung Video Editor looks fantastic. You can trim video clips and join them together. There are various special effects that can be applied, and you can change sound tracks. There's even a variety of export options!

And yes, in case you're wondering, editing video on your phone will suck your battery dry.

Tesla Death Ray is an addictive tower defense game

tesladeathray
Last week I wrote about Xeno Defense and this week I found Tesla Death Ray, which is almost as addictive, but is clad in a somewhat different costume.

It's a tower defense game in which you have to zap your enemies to oblivion. Much like in Xeno Defense, at the end of each level you get to the store and can use your hard-earned points to purchase upgrades and repair your tower.

Unlike Xeno Defense, you only get to the store if you pass the level. This makes the game much harder, because it means if you've made some wrong choices in terms of upgrades, now you're stuck with a level you simply cannot pass, and need to start the game all over again.

I should at least be able to sell off some of my equipment between retries of the same level, I think. But despite this one flaw, the game manages to be addictive, fun, and fast. I like it, and probably would have finished it if it hadn't been for the upgrade problem.

Kindle for iOS updated with real page numbers and new progress indicators

Amazon's Kindle eBook app for iOS devices just got an update to version 2.6, which adds some minor (but useful!) features. You can now view the actual page numbers of thousands of Kindle books -- which correspond to the physical editions -- making it easier to cite passages or jump from screen to paper without losing your place.

And speaking of finding your place in a book, Kindle for iOS 2.6 has added two new ways to see how far along you are. Progress meters now appear below each book listing in your Kindle library, so you can see at glance how much you've read. The iPhone version of the app also adds a "percentage complete" indicator that you can view while reading.

Finally, you can also make Google and Wikipedia searches from within Kindle. No more interrupting your reading so you can jump to Safari to look up a word or a bit of background!

First Windows Phone 7 update results in bricked Samsung phones

windows phone 7 update brick
We didn't expect Microsoft's first global update for Windows Phone 7 go off without a snag, but several owners of Samsung WP7 devices are really regretting pushing the update button yesterday. The update has reportedly had trouble with the Omnia 7, resulting in bricked handsets or an updater which locks up before it completes. Microsoft is aware of the issues, and is currently working to resolve them.

There are also plenty of users reporting that the update still hasn't been offered -- including yours truly and blogger Manan Kakkar. If you've got a Windows Phone 7 device, how did your update experience go? Was it snag free, or or you now holding a very shiny doorstop?

Echofon 4 hits iPhone and iPad, adds user streams and media viewer

Echofon is one of the most popular third-party Twitter clients for iOS devices -- and it just got a big update, mere weeks after being acquired by UberMedia. Echofon 4 adds some valuable new features, including real-time tweets (via Twitter's user streams API) and inline photo and video previews.

Echofon 4 also has global push notifications, so users who were sticking with the official Twitter for iPhone just for that feature can now give Echofon another shot. The ability to mute users is another useful addition, and it's something Twitter for iPhone still doesn't offer.

Echofon comes in ad-supported and paid flavors, and the paid version offers syncing across Echofon's various platforms (iPhone, iPad and desktop).
