Twitter for Windows Phone shows off slick new Metro interface

Twitter users on Windows Phone 7 now have an official app to play with. Twitter for Windows Phone was created by the Twitter team and Identity Mine -- a development house specializing in Microsoft platforms. The app uses a slick-looking new "Metro" interface, powered by Windows Phone 7's Pivot feature, which lets you navigate by swiping left or right to other pages within the app. In the case of the Twitter app, those pages are your timeline, mentions, direct messages, trending tweets and more.

Twitter's announcement focuses on the Windows Phone app's simplicity and ease of use, but it also appears to include advanced Twitter features, including viewing photos and locations. Developers will be interested to know that the app was created using an open source REST API called Tweet Sharp, and that the developers at Identity Mine improved upon the code and contributed it back to the open source project.

Firefox 4 maxes out SunSpider benchmark

SunSpider JavaScript benchmark chart
Asa Dotzler, not content with graphing the total run-time of the SunSpider benchmark, has provided a beautiful chart that breaks down the JavaScript performance of Firefox, Safari, Opera and Chrome. Take a look at it above, or click through to see a larger version. Internet Explorer 8 is missing because it was too slow -- and IE9 is missing because the test machine ran Windows XP, but Asa says he will follow up with same test on Windows 7.

Looking at the chart, you will probably come to the same conclusion as him: JavaScript performance, at least as measured by SunSpider, has plateaued. With just one hundredth of a second between Opera, Firefox and Chrome, it really is time for SunSpider to take a bow and exit stage left. Or -- and this is Mozilla's preference -- it's not about how fast the engine is -- it's really about how you use it.

Fortunately there's a rigorous and more 'modern' test in the form of Google's V8 benchmark, and Mozilla's Kraken benchmark promises to provide more 'real world application' statistics. If you're wondering, Google Chrome currently leads the V8 benchmark, and Mozilla Firefox leads the Kraken benchmark. No surprises there, really.

IE9 Beta downloaded 10 million times, more details on Developer Preview 6

A few moments ago Dean Hachamovitch took the stage at the Microsoft Professional Developers Conference, summarily bounced around, and then gave us the news: IE9 Beta has now been downloaded over 10 million times, in just six weeks.

Today also sees the release of Platform Preview 6, which unfortunately -- as far as non-developers are concerned -- doesn't feature any significant outwardly-facing changes. Under the hood, however, there have been lots of bug fixes and performance enhancements. News is good on the standards-compliance front, too: IE9 now has support for CSS3 2D transforms and HTML5 semantic tags. For further details, check the release notes.

The real question, though, revolves around IE9 Beta 2. When is it due? And if the rumors about IE9 launching in January 2011 are true, is there even time for a second beta?

Beware: malware version of Microsoft Security Essentials in the wild

Microsoft Security Essentials fake
A new and exceedingly evil piece of malware that very cleverly imitates Microsoft Security Essentials (MSE) has emerged. It goes by the designation Win32/FakePAV -- and if you haven't recently updated your virus and malware definitions, do it now.

Screenshots on the Malware Protection Center website show this piece of malware to be depressingly good -- it really does imitate MSE very well. It probably wouldn't catch out power users (what does?), but it's easy to see how your friends and family might be fooled by this dastardly rogue.

As always, the attack vector is drive-by download, where an infected website sends you the malware executable. The first thing it does is load itself into registry, then it terminates a huge list of processes, and finally it starts popping up MSE-lookalike dialogue boxes that warn you of infection. Of course, it also watches for any programs you try to start -- if it doesn't like them, it pops up a warning box to tell you it's infected.

The best bit -- and you really need to look at the screenshots (scroll down) to appreciate this -- is that it tries to get you to buy a slew of other "anti-virus" packages with names like Red Cross Antivirus, Peak Protection 2010 and Pest Detector. Each of these fake apps has a splash screen and even a unique logo!

Remember, as technology improves, the nefarious capabilities of malware authors will also blossom. The only real solution is to stay one step ahead -- and the best way you can do that is to practice safe browsing and keep your virus and malware software up-to-date.

iPhone bug lets anyone easily bypass the lock screen to look at your photos

iPhone holding it wrong (thanks, Gizmodo)Bad news: if you own an iPhone 4, be careful -- bypassing your lock screen is simply a matter of hitting "emergency call," dialling "###," presssing the call button, then immediately pressing the lock button. Voilá -- one cracked iPhone. After the break, there's a video of some Spanish Portuguese-speaking guy showing you how to carry out the exploit.

This bug, which will surely cause a cascade of clenching and face palming across the world -- or at least the portions of the world that can afford iPhones -- seems to only affect the iPhone 4, or the 3GS with iOS 4.1 installed. Apple hasn't commented yet, so we only have the comment threads of Neowin and Wired to work with, and the reports are mixed. It looks like the bug does not allow the running of applications, but it does allow full access to your address book, call history, and photo album.

No doubt this will develop (or blow up) throughout the day, and we'll be sure to bring you any updates as they happen.

We'll have our own hands-on report later in the day, but let us know your initial thoughts in the comments.

Firefox Friday: Open Apps, Open Games, Open UI... and the world's fastest JavaScript engine

Good afternoon! Firefox Friday has been decidedly absent from the luridly green pages of Download Squad over the last few weeks, but it returns today with vengeance.

A lot has been happening at Mozilla, with developments emerging on all fronts. As always we've covered the most important bits, but there's still a lot more to tell you about.

Let's crack on with the first and perhaps most telling titbit:

Mozilla has a new CEO: Gary Kovacs

John Lilly, after almost three years at the top, has stepped aside for newcomer Gary Kovacs. Kovacs has a ton of experience in product management (10 years at IBM), and also significant knowledge of rich media and the mobile Web (5 years at Macromedia, then Adobe). For further reading, Lilly has a great blog post introducing Kovacs.

With this appointment it's clear that Mozilla is fully invested in making Firefox the best browser, both on the desktop and on mobile devices. If you thought the difference between Firefox 3.6 and 4.0 was a big leap, you can only begin to imagine what 5.0 will bring with Kovacs at the helm.

Game On 2010: the judges are announced, and the first fruits of the competition begin to trickle in

The new Game On competition always struck me as rather unMozilla. When I picture the average Mozillan, many kind adjectives pop into my mind but gamer isn't one of them. Still, if you had any doubts, take a look at the list of judges. There are 30 of them, and while they're not all A-listers, there are some big names from Zynga, Facebook, Palm, and more. Almost everyone that's anyone in the JavaScript community is on the list!

If you want to get in on the action, there are already tons of resources on the Game On website. You should probably subscribe read the Game On blog, too.

Also worth noting, if you're in the San Francisco Bay Area, is that the next Mozilla Labs Night (October 28) will be a 'Gaming Special'. I'm not quite sure what it will entail, but the Labs Nights are usually a lot of fun... so sign up and head on down to Mountain View! [I wish I lived in San Francisco...]

Mozilla finally plays its next hand in the Apps War: Open Web Applications

Earlier this year, at the Mozilla Summit, attendees were asked what would make the perfect Web App Store. A lot of heated discussion ensued, but ultimately the summit ended and radio silence descended. This week Mozilla Labs broke that silence with the release of the Open Web Applications Technology Overview and the new apps.mozillalabs.com website.

The concept is brilliant, and there's a demo App Store and Directory that you can play with today. The most important part, however, is that Open Web App developers will have the option of self-publishing their software. This is in stark contrast to the Google-centralised Chrome offering -- and light years ahead of the Mac App Store.

We're not quite at the stage where HTML, JavaScript, CSS and SVG are ready to replace every desktop app, but the Open Web App specification has come just at the right time. Mozilla may just have secured the future platform for all installed apps.

Build your own browser with Mozilla Labs Chromeless

Have you ever looked at the Firefox UI, at that big orange button, and thought to yourself 'hmm... I could do it better'? Well, now's your chance! Using HTML, CSS and JavaScript you can now create your own browser interface.

Chromeless is a pre-alpha prototype at the moment (grab the code here), but the team has grand plans to make browser UI design as 'easy as designing a Web page'. It's an interesting concept that, like all forms of crowdsourcing, might turn up some fantastic new designs.

Last, but by no means least, Firefox JavaScript performance pulls ahead of Chrome and Safari

Launched by the JavaScript team at Mozilla, ARE WE FAST YET? details the reassuringly steady improvement of Firefox's JavaScript engine. Up until yesterday the site featured a huge 'NO' at the bottom of the page -- today... well, you can see for yourself!

Basically -- and you have to admit this is pretty darn impressive -- it has only taken three months for Mozilla to reach Chrome and Safari's level of JavaScript performance. This is only the result of one synthetic benchmark, so the results are hardly authoritative -- but then again, Firefox still leads the 'real world' Kraken benchmark, too.

* * *
Not a bad week for Mozilla, then! Open Web Apps, Open Web Games and even an Open User Interface -- and they're all powered by the fastest JavaScript engine in the world.

AOL launches homepage redesign

Filed under:

AOL -- our benevolent overlord -- has finally taken the wraps off its new homepage design. The new page, which was initially slated for launch on Monday, emphasizes AOL content from our sites like Engadget, Switched and DailyFinance, and also features heavy social integration. Apart from current trending topics, the page will also display activity from your AOL Lifestream if you've got an account set up.

You can also swap out the logo background image from one of the many other funky options -- or let AOL surprise you with a random one. Interestingly enough, despite the fact that the new look AOL loads up just fine in Chrome Canary, Internet Explorer 9 still shows the old design.

Is it raining in ... helps you answer one simple question

For a Web 2.0 application, Is it raining in ... follows the book pretty closely. It is:

  • Minimalistic: This thing couldn't possibly be more bare-bones. There isn't a single image on the page.
  • Simple: Just go to http://isitraining.in/ and type a city's name. It will try to figure out the country on its own.
  • Nerd-friendly: The app URL format is very friendly, obviously meant to be used right from the browser without going through the main page first. For example, http://isitraining.in/the-pas.

And for all those reasons, I love it. It doesn't let you see just precipitation information, either; you can see the local time at the destination, a general description of the weather ("partly cloudy", etc), as well as the temperature.

The one Web 2.0 trend the developer bucked was omitting vowels from the URL, and I'm grateful for that. I wouldn't want to use istrnng.in or some other annoying variation on that theme. The existing URL is pretty much ideal, if you ask me.

The service seems to be supported through a thin line of Google text ads at the bottom. That's fairly unobtrusive. All in all, definitely one for the toolbox.

CCleaner version 3 goes 64-bit, adds secure disk wipe, Windows 7 integration

When it comes to system cleanup programs, CCleaner is pretty much the hands-down favorite with Download Squad readers. It's been a trusted tool for years, and the newly-released CCleaner 3 is better than ever.

What's new in v3? To start, there's now a native 64-bit version in both the installer and portable CCleaner. Windows 7 users also get the benefit of a handy jump list, which offers quick access to the cleaner, registry scanner, tools, and options pages. There's also a new disk wiping tool included which supports DOD, NSA, and Gutmann standards.

CCleaner 3 has improved support for Internet Explorer 9, Google Chrome, and Silverlight. Perhaps the app's best new feature is support for HTML5 localStorage objects -- which many websites are now using to store persistent user data.

Flickriver is a fun way to browse through Flickr photos

flickriver

Flickriver was briefly mentioned on Download Squad back in 2007, but it really deserves its own post.

It's a very simple interface for browsing Flickr photos which displays a bunch of photos on the page, and you scroll down to view them. As you near the bottom, more photos are loaded so that you can just keep scrolling. This is by no means a new trick, but I find it very convenient and easy to use. What's nice about it is that it pre-loads four images at a time, so I don't find myself waiting for the next image when I want to view it.

You can search by photo, group, user, tag, or location, and then you can sort the results according to relevance, recency, or "interestingness." The whole thing is very low-key; it has a dark background, an uncluttered interface, and the bare minimum of JavaScript required to make it work. You won't find anything sliding around, fading in and out, or being overly modern.

Flickriver just gives you the photos you want to look at, with no frills.

Search your Google Chrome tabs with Spot

I don't typically browse with more than a handful of open tabs, but every now and then I wind up with a vast forest of them. When that happens, it's easy to lose that one tab you're actually looking for.

No worries, however, with the Spot extension for Google Chrome. Just click the magnifying glass icon and start typing something you remember about the page and Spot quickly returns a list of matches. Just click a result to be taken to the tab. The results list is also keyboard-navigable for those who eschew excess mousing.

Spot's developer also says he's working on integrating Chrome history and bookmarks in future versions.

Google Latitude for Android now lets you track your friends' locations in real time

Google Maps for Android just got a big update, including the ability to read and add reviews of a place using Google's recently-launched Place pages, the ability to search for nearby and currently open businesses, and -- most interesting of all -- real-time tracking of your friends' locations in Google Latitude.

Latitude is Google's location-tracking service, which up until now has let you quickly share your location with your trusted friends, or publish it to your blog, but it's never caught on the way more game-centric location apps like Foursquare and Gowalla have. Latitude reported 3 million active users earlier this year, but Foursquare has since passed it up, aided by the launch of Facebook Places.

This update to the Google Maps Android app gives Latitude something the other guys don't have: the ability to temporarily see a friend's location in real time, instead of just when they manually check in. Click on a friend, and you'll get much faster location updates from them while you're trying to meet up. Making the real-time service temporary helps reduce worries about constant stalking, while still helping you find your friends. To make this work, you and your friends will both need the new Google Maps 4.6 and Android 2.2 or higher.

Brad Sucks Digital Download Store is a free, easy-to-install Web storefront

bradsucksdigitaldownloadstore

Canadian Brad Turcotte, AKA Brad Sucks, makes music. In fact, he makes open source music, and he lets people download the source files of his songs for free and remix them into all sorts of weird creations.

Given his open source musical model, it should come as no surprise to you that Brad is a nerd. And as a nerd, he scratched his own itch and created the Brad Sucks Digital Download Store.

The store is aimed mainly at selling digital goods, and it relies on existing solutions for storage and billing. That means an Amazon S3 account is recommended (but not required), and a PayPal account is required. The store generates expiring URLs for downloading your content, and it gives buyers instant access to your content once they've paid up.

One feature that's missing is a "pay as much as you want" option, a la Bandcamp. That's not a bad idea, and it's one that I hope to see Brad implementing in the future.

And while you're at Brad's site, go check out his upcoming album, Guess Who's a Mess. Not all of the tracks are ready, but you can already listen to some full-length tunes.

2 Great Google Analytics Apps for iPhone and iPad

When Google Analytics was released in late 2005, it quickly became in demand more due to its accessible price tag of free than many users actually fully understanding its detailed statistics power. What it did do for marketers like myself, who were eager to know the nuts and bolts of website traffic and how my [...]

Pandoc is a Swiss Army knife text conversion utility

I love Markdown. If you write any sort of content for the Web, you really should try it; it's a simple notation system for making text bold or italic, creating headlines and bulleted lists, and more. To make text bold, for example, you just need to surround it with asterisks.

Converting Markdown into valid HTML is a fairly common task, and there's no dearth of tools that do this. But Pandoc caught my eye because it can do this and a whole lot more. Plus it's free, open source, and cross-platform.

Pandoc understands Markdown, HTML, and several other formats, and it can output:

  • plain text - i.e., strip all HTML and give you just the text
  • Markdown - so you can convert HTML back into Markdown for editing
  • And a whole list of other formats, including HTML, LaTeX, ConTeXt, PDF, RTF, DocBook XML, OpenDocument XML, ODT, GNU Texinfo, MediaWiki markup, groff man pages, EPUB ebooks, and S5 and Slidy HTML slide shows

It even supports PDF output using a helper utility. So yes, it can convert Markdown to HTML (and vice versa), but it can do so much more, too. It's definitely one for the toolbox!

Alright, let me be frank, I have only just recently even given the slightest bit of attention to Google Voice. There I said it. I think it’s like one of those things you’re really afraid to talk about with almost anybody, but you’re kind of deeply ashamed to admit that you don’t know about it, like is it ever really OK to drink the very last beer in the fridge and not say anything about it? That’s kind of how I felt about Google Voice I guess. I didn’t really see the point of it; why would I want to add yet another number to the already massive list of numbers that I’m supposed to know but don’t? That and I already have a hard enough time keeping up with one voicemail, much less two, or more.

But once I set up my account and fired up GV Mobile+, from developer Sean Kovacs, I almost instantly saw the light. Now I could have that super secret phone number that only a select few even know about, like my second girlfriend, or the other members of that casual international spy ring I’m in. (Great, now I’m probably on some FBI list! I’m not a spy, it was a bad joke…)

Seriously though, the extra number is actually kind of great, and–dare I say–useful. Who would have thunk it? As for ease of use, GV Mobile + is a breeze. At least if you know how to use your iPhone in the first place. It’s like having two cell phones in one! You can send and receive calls and texts straight from GV Mobile’s interface and any incoming calls and texts can be routed to any phone you choose if you don’t want it coming back to your iPhone. As described on the site, Google Voice gives you one phone number and voicemail box that’s tied directly to you and not  a specific device or location. I can definitely see the usefulness of this even for myself, but if you’re a small business owner, or freelancer, Google Voice can basically give you a free, unique business telephone number with voicemail.

I won’t go into all the features of Google Voice here as they’ve got a great help page with all the info you’ll ever need and an easy to follow Getting Started guide to help, well, get you started. GV Mobile + is $2.99 at the App Store and well worth it it my opinion. It’s a great easy to use app backed up by a super supportive developer. Try it today!

Apple posts higher revenue than Microsoft

Apple earned more revenue this quarter than their ancient frenemy, Microsoft. Roughly $20 billion to $16 billion, or $4 billion more. Not too long ago they passed Microsoft in market cap as well, another impressive sounding, if not terribly meaningful measure. Microsoft still leads in profit due to their software-centric business being much higher margin [...]

Google Chrome Dev channel update brings password sync, minor tweaks

Google has update the Chrome Dev channel to 8.0.552.18 on all platforms, and while the focus this time is on polish and bug fixes, one important new feature has arrived.

First spotted in the Canary build a few days ago, password sync is now available to Dev channel users and enabled by default. I'm still not certain the sync is actually active, though, as my Canary builds on three machines still seem to be running password stores that are noticeably out-of-sync.

At this point, there are really only two pieces missing from the Chrome sync puzzle: tabs and search engines, both of which would be extremely handy (so how about it, Google?).

Unicorns, the Nexus Two, Continuum and HTC Merge [From the forums]

From the Android Forums at Android Central

Where do we talk about gnomes, unicorns and Android phones that might or might not exist? In the Android Forums at Android Central, of course! Here's what's going on as we head into the weekend:

  • The Nexus Two/Nexus S if on everybody's mind this week, and everybody has their own source on what it is, and when it's coming out. Discuss the Nexus Two rumors here.
  • The Samsung Continuum is expected to be announced on Nov. 8. We've already had our hands on it. Have a question? Ask it here!(Oh, and there might be free stuff involved.)
  • Then there's the HTC Merge, coming to Verizon. It's just a question of when, folks. Discuss the HTC Merge here.
  • And of course there's the Wifi-only version of the Samsung Galaxy Tab. Is it coming? When is it coming, and how much is it going to cost? We're talkin' Tab here.
