Apple’s new iPhone 4 honeymoon has been cut short temporarily due to the ‘Death Grip’ problem reported in the new device. The iPhone 4 shows a dramatic decrease in the signal strength when you hold the device in your hands while touching the external antenna. Apple was quick to acknowledge the problem and yesterday, the company clarified that the loss of signal strength is due to bug in the software algorithm and there’s absolutely nothing wrong with the iPhone 4 antenna hardware.
Apple will release a free software update within a few weeks to resolve the issue. The software update will be available for the iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS devices as well.
Over the last few days, Apple and AT&T have been sued by a number of people over concerns that they’ve been cheated as Apple has shipped devices with a faulty antenna design. To make matters worse, the internet has been full of news related to emails from Steve Jobs telling customers that they were “not holding the device correctly”. As expected, those emails have turned out to be fake.
Apple says that it has in fact received several emails saying that the iPhone 4 reception is better than the 3GS. The company clarifies that “gripping almost any mobile phone in certain ways will reduce its reception by 1 or more bars” – be it Droid, Nokia or a RIM phone. The company says that it has identified a bug in the formula that calculates how many bars of signal strength should be displayed at any point of time. This bug causes the number of bars displayed to be more than the current signal strength. Apple is implementing a fix which will display the bars as per the real signal strength.
So, should users be careful not to touch the antenna while holding their new iPhones. Yes, of course and it shouldn’t matter how many bars are being displayed on the device. After all, if you touch the antenna on any phone, you are limiting its signal strength. To be honest, I believe that the issue has been blown out of proportion by the media and by Apple’s competitors. The iPhone 4 is Apple’s most successful product launch ever and understandably, its competitors are licking their wounds.
My advice – don’t worry about the antenna. It’s all bull shit media hype, just enjoy the splendid features on your new iPhone!
