TestFlight simplifies iPhone app testing with over-the-air distribution

TestFlight is a new service that aims to fix a lot of the problems with iPhone app testing. If you've ever developed an iPhone app or served as a tester for an unreleased one, you know how much of a pain it is: collecting the UDIDs for the testers' phones, distributing .ipa files, and then distributing new .ipa files every time something changes ... yuck! TestFlight streamlines the process, keeping track of all your testers and pushing app updates over the air.

With TestFlight, you can say goodbye to emailing out updated .ipa files and asking testers to manually sync them via iTunes. Instead, you get over-the-air distribution to your whole list of testers -- grouped, if you want, so you can test multiple versions of your app at the same time! -- and an easy-as-pie version manager. No wonder the makers of apps like Tweetie, The Incident, and Posterous all gave gushing testimonials for the TestFlight website.

If you want to demo TestFlight, you can (no joke) drag your .ipa to a box on testflghtapp.com, enter some email addresses, and hit submit. Then, just watch the counter tick up as your testers install the app. That's why they call it "magical." TestFlight is free for developers, and enterprise accounts are available if you email the devs.

Facebook temporarily removes developer access to your home address and mobile number

Facebook, after a quiet announcement of the new home address and mobile phone access permissions, has made a quick about-turn. Citing some "useful feedback," Facebook has decided to to make changes "to help ensure you only share this information when you intend to do so."

The feature, which will be re-enabled in a few weeks, will allow Facebook app developers to request both your home address and mobile phone number. The changes being made will hopefully involve a bold, explicit warning in the Request for Permission boxes -- the boxes that you click through to use a new app -- but hopefully there are some better solutions on the table, too.

Ideally, Facebook would give us the option of securing your details permanently, from your Privacy Settings page. There should be a check box that simply says "never give my home address out" -- but that might be a little too hopeful.

LibreOffice 3.3, the open source office suite, now available

LibreOffice -- the Document Foundation's fork of OpenOffice -- has come a long way since the project was first announced in September 2010. Today, the Foundation has announced that its first stable release, LibreOffice 3.3, is ready to download.

Among the many changes you'll find in version 3.3 are the arrival of new import filters and improvements to existing ones -- key features when you're trying to persuade users to migrate from competing suites like Microsoft Office, Works, or WordPerfect. Calc (the LibreOffice spreadsheet app) now boasts better Excel interoperability, SVG images can be opened and modified in Draw, and they can also be imported into Writer.

The Suite's PowerPoint alternative -- Presenter -- now ships with a presentation mode plug-in which makes controlling slideshows from your laptop a breeze. Testers will enjoy the addition of Experimental Mode, which you can toggle if you'd like to play with new features before they've officially been added to LibreOffice. It's a bit like the about:flags page in Google Chrome. LibreOffice 3.3 also sports a long list of interface and usability tweaks -- check out this page at the official site for a complete rundown.

How to share files using a homegroup on Windows 7

This week we're running a series of posts that tackle common Windows networking issues, and some tips and tricks that might speed up or improve your network stability. You can find more tech tips in our Tips index.

One slick new feature Windows 7 introduced was the homegroup, a simple yet powerful way to share files and printers among users on your home network. If you created a homegroup during the Windows 7 setup process, you can simply right click any folder and choose share with and then grant read-only access (which lets other view and play files) or read-write access (which lets them edit, delete, and add new files).

If you haven't created a homegroup already, it's easy enough to do. Before you start, head to the Network and Sharing Center (hit the Windows key, type sharing, then hit enter). Beneath your active networks, check your current network type. If it's not Home network, click the text (which should say Work or Public) to switch. Only computers on a Home network can join a homegroup -- makes sense, right?

Once you make this change, Windows will search your network for an existing group and ask you to join if it finds one. If not, you'll be asked to create a new one. Choose what kinds of files you want to share, and make sure you jot down the random password Windows creates -- or set your own, more-memorable password.

On your other computers, you only need to join your homegroup. Click the Windows key and type homegroup, then press enter. Windows will detect your homegroup, and you can click the Join now button to connect. Set your sharing options and click next, then enter your password. Now you can right-click and share folders on your other computers as well!

Can't remember your homegroup password? Open the homegroup screen on your other computer(s) and click the link at the bottom of the window to view or print the homegroup password. Once you've entered it on the new system, Windows will begin scanning your network for homegroup-accessible libraries, folders, and printers.

Apple website updated with HTML5 goodness

Whenever Apple's website goes down, there's speculation about a new product announcement. No white iPhone 4 today, though, just an HTML5-powered redesign of Apple.com itself. There's some subtle animation (try clicking on the Mac or iPod tabs), a new, darker nav bar, and a slight gradient to the background.

The only big usability improvement here is the new magically-expanding search field that shows suggested results as you type. Page load times don't seem noticeably different, either. Also, as TUAW points out, the changes aren't iPad compatible yet. Is this the kind of revamp that only die-hard Apple fans and software bloggers will even notice, or are the changes in the site obvious to the average customer? More importantly, do you like the new site better than the old one?

UPDATE: The site now seems to be displaying properly on the iPad.

Spikes Tend to Kill You is an super-fast retro platformer -- Time Waster

spikestendtokillyou
Spikes Tend to Kill You has got to be one of the nicest games I've played in a while. It's an old-school platformer, and it is very well made.

You're just a cube, and the graphics are retro. But the game is very fast and very responsive. Each level takes exactly one screen, and as you may have gathered from the name, touching spikes is not a good idea.

Other than avoiding spikes, you will have to avoid bullets. Those rounded protrusions you see sticking out from the walls in the screenshots are cannons, shooting out bullets at specific intervals. You can touch the cannon, but can't touch a bullet. So you need to time your movement just right, often taking into account more than just one cannon.

When you strike out, you immediately start the level again - no waiting, no limited lives. Very very addictive. Eventually you get familiar enough with a level to "choreograph" it - i.e, you know exactly when to jump, when to run, and when to wait. And then, of course, you move to the next level.

The only slight downside here is that the soundtrack is too 8-bit for me, but I guess that's a personal thing. A superb time-waster.

Can't stop, won't stop -- Android crushes Symbian numbers

Another analyst group is reporting new record numbers for Android today. Canalys has released showing Android in the fourth quarter of 2010 shipped 33.3 million devices worldwide. That's a HUGE difference from Q4 2009, in which Android shipped a mere 4.7 million units. The real crux of it all is that Symbian is starting to trail behind in numbers. Once the leader in smartphones around the globe, Symbian shipped 31 million units in Q4 2010. Granted, 31 million is still a very large number for Nokia, but when Google is showing this much growth from last year -- 615.1% to be exact. [Canalys via Engadget]

BlueGriffon: a cross-platform WYSIWYG HTML5 and CSS3 editor based on Firefox 4

If you want to get in on the HTML5 and CSS3 revolution, and would prefer some training wheels while you learn all of the new HTML tags and CSS transitions and transforms, look no further than BlueGriffon. It's free, open-source, and runs on Windows, Mac OS X and Linux.

BlueGriffon is built upon a recent version of Firefox 4. It uses the same Gecko page layout engine -- and in fact, lots of the UI elements look like they've come straight from Firefox 4. There are even add-ons to provide extra functionality, but they'll cost you 30 euros (about $40).

As far as actual usability goes, BlueGriffon is pretty good. The UI isn't exactly easy to use (but these things rarely are), but source editor is good -- and there's a built-in SVG creator that works well. You have access to all of the HTML5 tag types and CSS3 selectors, but not through the right-click context menu, which is annoying. The primary feature of BlueGriffon has to be the ability to see the effect of CSS3 selectors instantly -- or simply as a text editor that has a built-in Firefox 4 preview window.

According to WebUpd8, the nightly builds are the most stable. Also, if you're using Linux, grab the binary installer rather than the .deb, which apparently has some issues. The Windows build crashed quite a few times during my tests, too.

Android hackers have done it again, and the Samsung Transform now has a stable Froyo port.  The front facing camera and rear camera flash isn't working, but that's a fair trade off to have a working version of Android 2.2.1, especially since Sprint themselves seem to have no clue about the upgrade path of the Transform.

The installation looks really straightforward and while slightly technical, the instructions are easy to read.  Follow them closely and you should have no problems getting things up and running.  Hit the source link to get started. [SDK Developers via @jibustillo]

About.me adds profile sharing, people search, and a gorgeous directory

About.me, the flashy personal profile site that was snapped up by AOL just days after opening to the public, has added some important missing features. It doesn't matter how cool or useful your profile is if nobody can find it, and all of the additions to About.me make profile sharing and discovery easier. You can now quickly share your profile on your social networks, and browse or search for others' About.me pages.

Since you could already connect your Facebook and Twitter accounts to About.me, sharing buttons are kind of a no-brainer as a feature, and it's actually surprising that they weren't added before the sale to AOL. As far as the new features for discovering About.me users, they're all about the design. You won't search your friends on About.me to find links to all their social profiles, you'll search for them because you want to see what their cool splash page looks like. The directory is the same way: you can browse profiles and check out featured users whose profiles show off About.me's award-nominated design stylings.

Put the Reader link back in Gmail with a Chrome extension

Google made a minor tweak to the Gmail navigation links recently -- moving Photos into a more prominent spot and Reader into the More drop-down. While I wasn't particularly concerned (I've got Firefox hotkeys wired to most of my bookmarks for fast mouse-free access), the change created quite a stir on Twitter.

But as is usually the case, enthusiasts who don't want to accept changes on their favorite Web sites have already responded. If you want your Reader link back and you're using Google Chrome, grab the Put Reader Back extension. Once installed, just reload your Gmail tab to see the change.

Screen shot, leaked (and pulled) video point to possible Feb. 14 Best Buy launch of the HTC ThunderBolt

HTC ThunderBolt at Best Buy

We've seen a number of rumored launch dates come and go for the HTC ThunderBolt -- the upcoming LTE Android smartphone on Verizon. But rumor after rumor has offered little in the way of proof. But we now have some evidence that appears to connect a few dots -- dots that we've been discussing in the Android Central Forums for a day or so now. Check this out:

HTC ThunderBolt boxWe were sent the screen shot you see above earlier this week. Note that it's a Verizon device, with an in-stock date of Feb. 14 (1). Now note that the model is listed as BBY60LD (2). Best Buy does that so we can't (easily) know what device is listed ahead of time. That doesn't tell us much, now does it? But don't worry about it. It's a red herring.

Now look at the number we've circled at the top left (3) -- 044476816574 -- With us so far?

HTC ThunderBolt boxLater Friday, a video hands-on of the Thunderbolt appeared on YouTube, purportedly made by someone at HTC. The video has since been removed, but not before Android Central Forums member paulmike3 noticed that number -- 44476816574 -- on the proof of purchase attached to the box from which the ThunderBolt was pulled. It's grainy. It's blurry. But it's definitely there. And it's more than a coincidence.

So you've got the number on the Best Buy leak. And you've got it on the ThunderBolt box proof of purchase. We've connected some major dots here, and it indeed looks as if Best Buy plans to have the HTC ThunderBolt in stock on Feb. 14. Happy Valentine's Day.

Some questions still remain. When will it be available on Verizon? (Feb. 11 has been rumored in the forums.) And is that Best Buy date real, or another placeholder? And how much is the phone going to cost? Big questions, all. And if you've got the answer, you know where to find us. Thanks, Paul, and Fire Dude!

Proxlet for Chrome mutes Twitter users, blocks apps, and filters hashtags

If you want more control over your Twitter stream, check out the Proxlet Chrome extension. Proxlet lets you easily mute any user (temporarily or forever), block any Twitter app, or filter out any hashtag. The most obvious use for Proxlet is filtering out app spam from the likes of Foursquare and Paper.li, but it's also great if your friends are tweeting from a conference you don't like or they suddenly pick up a hashtag meme that doesn't interest you.

The really fantastic thing about Proxlet is that it also works with some desktop and mobile apps, including TweetDeck Desktop, Twidroyd and Twitter for iPhone. The idea is so slick that it might not be a bad idea for Twitter to look at acquiring Proxlet or implementing some of these filters themselves. Sure, Twitter is supposed to be simple, but new use cases -- like app spam -- need new user tools, and Proxlet is one of the best new tools you can add to your arsenal.

How to hide the Ribbon menu in Microsoft Office applications

Ribbon
This week's series of tips will be focusing on handy little features for Microsoft Excel and Word. To see the previous tips, check our Tips index.

The new Ribbon interface on Office 2007 and 2010 is quite fancy, and once you get used to it, it's a lot of fun to use. One of its few downsides is that it's tall - far taller than a "traditional" menu. If you're working on a netbook or are otherwise pressed for screen space, it can sometimes be handy to collapse the Ribbon and make it as compact as a regular menu.

To collapse it, simply double-click one of the Ribbon's tabs, such as "Home". The whole thing will instantly shrink down to the line of tabs. Clicking a tab will temporarily expand it back. If you'd rather do the same thing using the keyboard, simply hit Ctrl+F1 (that's what I normally do).

Yahoo to enable Google and Facebook sign-in on all its Web properties

The Yahoo Network of Web properties will soon let you sign in with your Facebook or Google credentials. The change will go live tomorrow, January 20, and effectively hammers the death knell for Yahoo's continuing identity crisis.

Yahoo first rolled out a federated OpenID login to Flickr back in October, but Google was the only accepted third-party sign-in. With the upcoming change, you will be able to use Facebook and Google across all of Yahoo's Web properties -- which admittedly, after signing the death warrant of a bunch of its sites, is not a whole lot. Still, it means you'll be able to customize your Yahoo search experience, comment on Flickr photos, and play with the awesome Pipes RSS remixing service, all from the comfort of your Facebook sign-in.

Incidentally, you won't be able to use your Facebook or Google details to log into "desktop or mobile clients," which presumably means Yahoo Instant Messenger.

Balance is a challenging physics Time Waster

balance
Balance is a very simple game that manages to be surprisingly engaging.

All you have to do is just balance the stick on your virtual finger. I call it a "stick" for lack of a better name, but it seems to be a rudimentary 2D representation of a rotating plate, or a platform with a weight on it. You use your mouse to move your hand and you just have to keep moving it in the right direction so the stick doesn't lose its balance.

There are no real levels in this game - by that I mean that you never get to rest when a level is over and then start again all fresh and alert. When you manage to balance the stick for around 10 seconds (I tried counting, there's no indicator I could see), you simply level up. Every time you level up, the stick gets a tad shorter, and your task gets a bit harder. It seems like a really simple game at first, but when the stick gets really short, it starts to get pretty challenging. I managed to get up to level 10, so I'm not sure what happens when the stick runs out. Maybe you win, or maybe you just get a new stick, far superior to the one you started out with (tell me in the comments).

Another thing I liked about this game is the fact you can easily play it with your trackpad. Up until recently I was using the trackpad on my laptop exclusively, and it's nice to have a game that doesn't give an advantage to people who have a real mouse. It was even a bit easier with the trackpad!

All in all, a lovely way to distract yourself for a few minutes. You can fantasize about being a juggler in the circus while you play (not that I did, of course).

Zombie Bites is a gory retro platformer -- Time Waster
zombiebites
So, you're a zombie. And you're hungry, and you're all pixelated. You're going to stay pixelated and retro-looking, at least on this game. But you don't have to stay hungry: In Zombie Bites, you run around the level, finding humans. As soon as you touch a human and press SPACE, you attack. Your energy bar fills up a bit, but not so much. You must keep running and jumping in search of more humans you can eat.

"What's the problem?", I hear you say, "That screenshot is full of humans". No it's not - those are zombies! As we've all learned in science class, once a zombie bites a human, the human turns into a zombie. And that's exactly what happens in Zombie Bites, so you find yourself running around the level searching for the few remaining humans amongst a growing horde of zombies, which are busy biting those same humans you're trying to catch. Hectic!

It's not exactly an epic quest, but it's a cute game, especially if you're into zombies. The 8-bit style makes the gore seem kind of fetching, really.

Kamikaze Blocks is an explosive Time Waster

kamikazeblocks
When I write up a game, I usually have to classify it one way or the other: either it's an arcade-type game, or it's something more cerebral. Well, Kamikaze Blocks is one game that says, "why choose?"

The premise of the game is simple: It's a physics shooter, the type where you have to set off one or more explosive charges to blow all the blocks off the board. But what's unique about it is that you can choose whether or not you'd like to have a limited supply of shots every level. So if you want easy, arcade-style gameplay, you've got it - just use unlimited shots and blow those blocks off the board like there's no tomorrow.

On the other hand, if you're actually interested in a puzzle experience, simply select to have a limited number of shots, and there you go. Each level has a different quota of shots, depending on how complex it is.

Another thing I like about this game is the part where the fish eat the blocks once they've fallen off the stage. They make a really cute chewing sound!

Apple's iPad subscription service and News Corp's Daily news app delayed

Rupert Murdoch and News Corp. planned to launch The Daily, an appropriately-named daily news subscription service for Apple's iPad, next week. Now the launch has been delayed "for weeks" because of a hold-up on Apple's end. The Wall Street Journal's All Things Digital (also owned by News Corp., coincidentally) says the app is ready, but a "push" subscription feature Apple has been building is still not done.

The subscription service will make it possible for publications to auto-bill their subscribers, and have each issue delivered automatically to those customers' iPads. The Daily, which will reportedly cost 99 cents a week, will be the flagship for this new service, and other publications will certainly jump on board if the experiment is successful.

Kongregate Arcade returns to the Android Market with some minor changes

After being removed from the Android Market for breaking the rules, the Kongregate Arcade app is back! Yet again can you enjoy easy access to the best source of Flash games on the Web.

Kongregate Arcade was originally pulled because it itself acted as a marketplace for apps -- or at least, it appeared to. In actual fact, the app was just a portal to all of the Flash games on the Kongregate site. The original app hid the browser's address bar (why is this possible?), which made it look like everything was occurring in-app.

The changes to the app make it more obvious that the app simply links to Web pages with Flash games, rather than appearing to play games from within the app. The Arcade will now also use the browser's cache to store temporary Flash files, rather than "explicitly downloading and managing games on the SD card."

A QR code to install the app is after the break.

Netflix grades ISPs on HD streaming performance, Charter and Comcast get top marks

Netflix has released some numbers ranking various internet service providers based on how well they deliver Netflix HD video streams. The chart ranks the ISPs based on the sustained bitrate they deliver for a long HD movie, and the results are quite fascinating. Charter and Comcast top the list, with averages of 2,500-2,600 kbps. At the bottom of the list is Clearwire, an ISP majority-owned by Sprint.

That Comcast is treating Netflix traffic well enough -- or neutrally enough -- to rank near the top of this list is interesting, considering the recent feud between the two companies. Back in December, Comcast started charging Netflix partner Level3 an additional fee to stream Netflix video via Comcast's pipes. Judging by these numbers, though, the animosity doesn't extend to throttling Netflix traffic.

Time Warner, Cox and Suddenlink round out the top 5. Things could shuffle around, though: Netflix has promised to update the rankings each month, so ISPs won't be able to put the squeeze on them in secret. This could be useful data for Netflix customers shopping around for Internet service in parts of the the U.S. that offer a choice of ISPs, and it gives the providers additional incentive to treat Netflix fairly.

Notificant delivers Growl-like notifications across multiple Macs

Notificant is an OS X reminder app designed to work with multiple computers. It's not vying to replace Growl on your Mac; it's more of a complement to the venerable notification app. While Growl lets you get alerts from apps on your local machine, Notificant lets you create new alerts and reminders and send them to any of your computers.

Sure, with a little bit of tinkering in the Terminal, Growl can actually send notifications to other computers on your local network, but that doesn't help when you're out and about with your MacBook. With Notificant, you can quickly whip up a new reminder on your desktop machine using a Web interface, and have that reminder go off later on your laptop. It's like setting iCal reminders without iCal, and it works on as many computers as you want.

Notificant will run you 5 bucks in the Mac App Store, and you'll have to set up a (free) account to start using it.
