Nike+ iPhone app, now with GPS, is a runner's best friend

Filed under: Utilities, iPhoneAs much as I've always wanted to use Nike+ with my iPhone, I stayed away because of the required hardware. Well, the new version of the app doesn't require Nike+-equipped running shoes, so I'm ready to shell out my 2 bucks and hit the trail with nothing but my iPhone's internal GPS. Nike+ GPS gives you a readout of your speed, pace and distance covered, plus a visual record of your run using Google Maps, all without any shoes or kits to buy.

I also love RunKeeper's ad-supported free app, which overlaps a lot of the features of the Nike+ GPS version, but there are some advantages to paying for Nike+. First, your path on Google maps is color-coded to give a quick visual readout of how fast you were going during each part of your run. Second, and probably more important for current Nike+ diehards, the new app includes playlist support for Power Songs to complement your run. Nike+, like RunKeeper, has an online community where you can share your runs.
