Alright, when I first stumbled upon Midnight LD, I perked up most expeditiously. I mean, right, who wouldn’t want an interactive particle accelerator on their iPhone I asked myself as I reached for the mouse. Then I put my glasses on. Oh how fowl, the bitter taste of disappointment to learn that Midnight LD is merely a particle simulator. Sim. U. Lay. Tor. So much for creating a miniature black hole in my office; my whole week was ruined.
My mental faculties weren’t running at full speed at the time, give me a break! My disappointment was short lived because,as it turns out, Midnight LD is unexpectedly neat and addictive. Seriously, it’s great for a few minutes of zenning out when you can’t break away for a walk or something. It’s just a dark field of little glowy particles that respond to your touch in unexpected and beautiful ways by darting happily to and fro and flowing about in lovely patterns. Like liquid fireworks, man.
Yeah.
Midnight LD responds to more than just one finger too, you get really interesting and more complex patterns when you use multiple fingers in creative ways.
Drag your fingers around and make pretty little sparkly things appear like the things you see when you get hit in the head just a bit too hard. That’s pretty much the very heart of this app right there. That’s it. There are no settings, no menus, no controls and no instructions. Just let your fingers do the walking and be dazzled.
It’s so dang simple though, it’s brilliant! It is actually kind of meditative, I will go so far as to admit that, but I, like other reviewers, didn’t pick up on any god-like power-trips.
So really, if you look at it in a certain light, this app has really let me down twice: a) no handheld interactive particle accerlator, and b) no god-like powers. WTF? A lot of other apps and I’d be like, ‘Two strikes and you’re out!’, but ask yourself how many zen-out mini moments have you seen for $0.99? Try it.
For iPad users, the developer also released a HD version of Midnight called Midnight HD. It is available on App Store for $1.99. Go ahead and try it. If you are not convinced with what I said, check out the cool demo. You’ll love the app.
