On Wednesday, Google unveiled “Google Instant“, a new instant predictive-search feature that has all the makings of being a game changer in Internet Search. The idea is simple – “Search as you type” but its implementation is far from simple, especially on mobile devices. Google’s website says “Google Instant is not yet available on mobile, but we plan to release it soon” and it’s widely believed that the technology will arrive on Android devices and iPhone this fall. At this point of time, it’s not clear if Google Instant will be available as a website or an iOS app for the iPhone.
Whatever be the case, “Google Instant for Mobile” certainly looks to be a quantum leap in mobile search technology.
People type slowly, but read quickly and that’s the founding principle of “Google Instant”. A predictive search is faster, leads to smarter predictions and instant results. Though Google hasn’t disclosed a date for “Google Instant for Mobile” and it says that the app is still in development, I’m quiet impressed with what I’ve seen here and the demo video provided by Techcrunch. While the tool is far from perfect, the concept is very promising. I’m all for providing shortcuts to save time in typing and processing data on mobile devices and that’s precisely what Google Instant does. CNET points out that granularity is an added advantage of Google Instant for Mobile and I can’t agree more on that. It’s far more convenient to use a universal search widget than visit Google.com on a mobile phone.
The desktop version of Google Instant is customizable so I’d expect the mobile variant to offer some of those capabilities as well. For the technically inclined, Google Instant works using AJAX, a technique that allows rendering a page’s content without having to wait for the full page to load. The desktop version of the tool works on Chrome, Firefox, Safari and IE 8.
Check out these videos of Google Instant in action.
Google CEO Eric Schmidt says “Never underestimate the importance of fast.” and Google Instant is a perfect case in point. I’m eagerly looking forward to the mobile version of Google Instant. What about you?
