Google launches iPhone Latitude app, then takes it down

iphone google latitude app iconGoogle apparently launched and then retracted a Google Latitude iPhone app earlier this week. According to TechCrunch, an iOS client for the location-tracking service popped up in the Japanese App Store for less than a day before Google pulled it back down, and it apparently didn't appear in any other country's app store.

Latitude has been available as a web app on the iPhone for some time, but the native app was never submitted to Apple because it was assumed it would be rejected. Well, times change. There's now an official Google Voice app for iPhone, for example. Since Latitude has seemingly been approved now, it shouldn't be too long before it pops up in the US app store and around the world.

By the way, the biggest advantage of a native iPhone Latitude app is multitasking. You can't check in automatically in the background with the mobile web version of Latitude, but the iPhone app should offer that feature.
