If you needed an iPhone dock charger that doubles up as a backup solution, Iomega’s SuperHero is perfect for your needs. There’s little doubt that the iPhone is a great device and perhaps the best smartphone the world has ever seen, however its built-in backup and sync capabilities leave a lot to be desired. Not everybody likes to go through the hassle of installing iTunes on their computer or Mac and Iomega SuperHero is nothing short of a god-send for such lesser tech-savvy users.
On first looks, SuperHero looks like any other standard iPhone docking station. However, the difference is that the SuperHero not only charges your iPhone but also backs up important info between syncing sessions. It contains an SD slot and comes with a 4GB card onto which it backs up your photos and your contacts automatically. If you need more memory, simply upgrade to a bigger SD card. Further, it can support multiple iPhone devices as well.
The SuperHero does not back any iTunes music and videos as these are protected by Apple using DRM in order to safeguard against privacy. Perhaps, the biggest limitation of SuperHero is that it can’t copy emails and text as of now.
The Iomega’s SuperHero iOS app is soon expected to be available for free from the Apple iTunes store. Iomega says that the installation is easy and quick. Once installed, SuperHero user interface lets users select detailed backup and restore options. After that’s done, simply place your phone in the dock for charging and let the SuperHero do the rest. I particularly like the progress bar feature which keeps me informed of the backup status.
The Iomega SuperHero can save your day in case your iPhone is lost or stolen as it lets you restore your contacts and photos from the SD card. What’s more, the SuperHero works just as well with the latest generation iPod Touch as well.
Most chargers have little software intelligence and virtually none of the backup utilities can charge your iPhone. The Iomega SuperHero can do both for $69.99 and that includes a 4GB SDHC card. Not a bad deal, what do you say?
