Steve Jobs was ridiculed by experts and customers alike when he claimed that all smartphones and not the just the iPhone 4 suffer from the dreaded ‘Death Grip’ problem. He put forward a simple explanation that every mobile phone is liable to lose signal strength when held in a certain way.

The latest study from tawkon confirms that Jobs was right – the death grip can be easily demonstrated on several other phones including the Blackberry Bold and Google’s Nexus One. However, the tawkon study is likely to be a double-edged sword for Apple. Though it reaffirms company’s stand that ‘Death Grip’ is a common problem and not just limited to Apple iPhone, it also highlights the severe radiation and health hazards that iPhone (and other phone) users face due to this issue.

The tawkon app shows that when you hold any phone such that the antenna is shielded, the signal strength goes down and thereby your phone consumes extra power in order to improve its connection with cell towers. The app shows similar results on the iPhone 4.0, the BlackBerry 9700, and the Android Nexus One. Each of the devices leads to increased radiations when experiencing the ‘death grip’. While tawkon app for measuring the radiation effects is available at Blackberry App World, Apple has banned it from iTunes App Store.  tawkon has even created an online petition to allow tawkon app on the iPhone. The Android app is currently in preview mode and is likely to be released soon.

Whether intentional or not, the tawkon app has raised a larger question for phone makers – how do they tackle the radiation hazards? Here’s a video from tawkon which demonstrates the ‘death grip’ problem and increased radiation levels on iPhone, Blackberry and Android devices.

The app is now pending for Apple’s approval. Want to experience the ‘death grip’ and know how deadly the radiations are? Wait for a while and try out the tawkon app yourself.
