The blogosphere is ripe with speculations that Apple and Verizon are planning to launch a CDMA iPhone in January, 2011. TechCrunch claims that it has confirmed reports of Apple placing orders for million of Qualcomm chip sets that use the CDMA (code division multiple access) cell phone protocol. Since AT&T operates on GSM, it is no rocket science to understand what Apple and Verizon are up to!
If the rumors are indeed true, it would be the last nail in the coffin for Apple’s marriage of inconvenience with AT&T. Further adding fuel to these speculations is the argument that though Qualcomm is the world’s largest fabless chip company, Apple has never purchased any baseband chipsets from Qualcomm before.
It’s fair to say that it would be a dream come true for millions of Verizon users who’ve envied their AT&T counterparts over the iPhone exclusivity issue. The rumors of iPhone coming to Verizon have been doing the rounds on the internet for several months now. In June, Bloomberg claimed that it has strong evidence to suggest that Apple’s iPhone exclusivity deal with AT&T is over for good and the company will start selling iPhones for an unknown carrier in 2011. These rumors died down when AT&T was yet again chosen as the exclusive partner for GSM-based iPhone 4.
Some rumors indicate that Verizon may be planning to unveil the CDMA-based iPhone at CES 2011, where its CEO Lowell McAdam has confirmed participation as a keynote speaker. Needless to say, the Verizon CDMA iPhone – whenever it launches, will be huge. Analysts believe that Verizon has the potential to sell a whopping 9 million iPhones in a year.
I’m not sure if the rumors regarding the January 2011 release of CDMA iPhone are true or not, but as an avoid iPhone admirer, I sincerely hope that more carriers and more users worldwide get access to this bestseller device. Apple should not fleece its staunch loyalists for the sake of maintaining worthless ‘exclusivity’ agreements.
So, is the CDMA-based iPhone launching in January, 2011? The answer – I don’t know, but I dearly hope so!
