Amazon has cut the price of their Kindle eReader from $259 to $189. They made this announcement on the same day the iOS 4 became available for the Apple iPhone and iPod Touch. Included in the iOS 4 update is access to Apple’s iBooks.

Is Amazon’s timing for this press release a coincidence or instead clever marketing? As more people choose the iPad or perhaps iPhone as their main eReader in lieu of Amazon’s Kindle device it’s likely that Amazon is doing everything they can to compete for their share of the eBook market.

Was this a bold move or desperate one by Amazon? Perhaps both, hard to say at this point. Whatever the case the Kindle does get a lot of praise for being light in weight making it easy to hold with one hand while reading. Another advantage the Kindle has is the fact it’s screen has no glare which makes reading books easy even in the sunlight.

So the question is at this point, will a cheaper Kindle be able to compete with that rapid growth of iPad sales? I’m sure we’ll find out soon enough. At least for now the eBook battle between the Kindle eReader and iPad continues.
