ICANN, the organization that controls top-level domain names, is reportedly ready to approve the controversial .XXX domain, intended for use by porn sites. It's an interesting decision that comes after years of debate.
Both porn businesses and anti-porn crusaders have opposed .XXX. On the porn end of things, there are worries that it will segregate adult sites and ruin their SEO. On the anti-porn side, people are uncomfortable with any official acknowledgement of sexually explicit content online [this, of course, despite the fact that you and I both know the Internet's primary purpose is the delivery of porn -Ed].
You know who's REALLY excited about .XXX, though? The registries who will be selling the new domain names. ICM Registry has published an enthusiastic blog post about ICANN's decision, and it's just dripping with excitement at their upcoming profits. Part of the sales challenge will be getting sites to opt in to .XXX, though. There's no indication that the new domain will ever be mandatory for adult sites, so it's really down to which domain makes the most business sense for each porn provider.
Where do you stand on the .XXX, domain Download Squad readers?
