Some time wasters are easy to define - "It's a platformer." Sometimes, though, I come across a game that is so original, it takes a whole paragraph to explain what is so cool about it. Hello Worlds is just such a game.
Yes, it's a platformer, but it's a game that happens at the same time on several different levels. The screen is split into two or more parts, and when you move, you move in all of the parts simultaneously. However, they are not completely different levels; they are all different faces of the same level.
So, when you stand on a platform in one "dimension," you seem to be hovering in the air in the others. Conversely, an obstacle in one dimension will block you in all others.
It gets even trickier; sometimes you need to stand on a platform in one dimension and use it to jump for a coin that is hovering in midair in another dimension.
This game is loads of fun, and gameplay is well thought-out. You can hit C to converge all dimensions into one view so that you can see what the whole level looks like. You can't move in this mode, though; you can just look.
When you make a mistake, you can hit V to rewind, and it gradually rewinds your moves until you release V. It's not just a simple undo; it's a timeline undo that lets you regain control of the character in midair if you want to. [A Braid homage! -Ed]
To finish a level, you have to open a door. Each dimension can have its own door, and when you open it, that dimension disappears. So, you can finish off the level in parts.
Another nice feature that shows the developer's attention to detail is the intelligent pause; when the game loses focus, it instantly and gracefully pauses, and even the music is turned down. You can instantly switch to another tab or window and come back and continue right from where you left off.
This lets you easily leave the game open in a tab all day long and come back to it occasionally, which you just might do if you give it a go. You've been warned.
