Microsoft unveils Windows Embedded Compact 7, shows off loads of new tablets

Details are a bit slim at the moment, but it looks like Microsoft has just released an Android competitor! But it isn't Windows Phone 7 -- no, it's an update to Windows CE: an embedded version of Windows 7 for devices that aren't quite powerful enough to run a full operating system.

It's targeted at tablets (check out the Engadget story for some pictures and a video of the tablets on display at Computex) and other gadgets that historically run Windows CE: PDAs, bank ATMs, cars, GPS navigation devices, scientific calculators -- any lightweight computer whose primary purpose isn't telephony, basically.

The Windows Embedded website is up and running, along with a list of its features. Top of the list is the inclusion of Silverlight, but there's also multi-touch support, Flash Lite and more.

You can grab a developer version of the OS today, along with Visual Studio tools needed to program it. Otherwise, expect to see some shiny 'Courier'esque devices in the next few months!
