Here's what's in store for this Twitter Tuesday: a great new Windows Twitter client (finally!), a Twitter dating site (groan!) and Twitter's director of search leaving the company (huh?!). We'll also talk about the fallout from Twitter's ban on third-party ad services last week.
Okay, let's do this!
First up, which companies will be affected by that third-party ad ban? ReadWriteWeb has an in-depth look at the situation, but here's the brief version: NOBODY is affected. Every Twitter ad network, from Ad.ly to Magpie to Sponsored Tweets, has come out and said it will be business as usual for them. Twitter's new TOS implies that these services may have to go through Twitter's own Promoted Tweets and split the revenue with Twitter in the future, but for now, these ad companies are at least pretending not to be worried.
Okay, Windows users, I know you're used to getting the short end of the stick when it comes to Twitter apps, but here's your new favorite Twitter client: MetroTwit. This Windows-only .NET-based client features a clean, column-based layout. It uses OAuth for sign-in, and integrates with Windows to offer toolbar notifications or sounds (which can definitely be turned off, too). Drawbacks? Only one account at a time, but that shouldn't bother most users. Between the attractive interface and customizable columns, MetroTwit's a solid new Twitter entry on Windows.
Over at Twitter HQ, there are some personnel changes underway. Twitter's Director of Search, Doug Cook, has left the company. TechCrunch was able to confirm Cook's departure, but not the reason for his split with Twitter. Right now, there's no reason to think it's anything but amiable. Twitter is expanding its search offering, and has created two new search teams to do that. It's not clear whether the Director of Search position even exists anymore under this new structure.
If you're single and on Twitter, there's a new site directed at you. Plenty of Tweeps (it's like Plenty of Fish ... get it?) connects single Twitter users by allowing you to login with your Twitter account and post a profile. Hey, what better way to get to know someone than by reading their Twitter postings? You'll know her favorite sandwich before the first date! I know it sounds goofy, but I actually applaud this site for trying to move the Twitter flirting off of Twitter. It's a little gross to watch people publicly hit on others, and this gives them a separate place to ... you know, get a room.
That's all we've got for this week's Twitter Tuesday! As always, please send me tips about Twitter apps and news you think I should cover next week. See you on Tuesday!
